The Maharashtra government will establish a state-level cultural centre and museum in Mumbai’s Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC). The facility will cover 14,418 square metres. State cultural affairs minister Ashish Shelar announced the project in the state assembly on Tuesday, March 18.
The cultural centre will have a research facility, art galleries, and an auditorium. It will promote Maharashtra’s heritage and encourage cultural exchange. It will attract both domestic and international tourists. Artists from around the world will get a platform to showcase their work.
The museum will have following features:
- A vast collection of historical artefacts.
- Exhibits will include ancient and mediaeval architectural ruins, weapons, fabrics, costumes, sculptures, inscriptions, copper plates, and objects found in excavations.
- Rare paintings by renowned artists will also be displayed.
The cultural affairs department will handle the project. A plot from the revenue department will be transferred for the development. The museum will serve as a link between the past and future by preserving valuable pieces of history.
The new museum will take inspiration from existing institutions in Mumbai. The Dr Bhau Daji Lad Museum and the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya will serve as models. The state government and Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) jointly maintain the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya.
