According to the latest reports, on Tuesday, May 31, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) published a list of 269 unauthorised schools functioning in Mumbai. The area that topped the list was Govandi with 49 such schools, accounts cited.

The BMC has reportedly made the list public on its website and asked parents to be cautious prior to taking admission. Based on narratives, while there are many areas with considerable unauthorised schools, none came as close to Govandi.

Apart from Govandi, other areas that featured on the list were MankhurdKurlaChembur, Wadala, Antop Hill, Dharavi, Santacruz and Jogeshwari. In other areas, there are not over 15 such schools. On the other hand, areas that have fewer numbers of unauthorised schools are Sion, Andheri, Ghatkopar, Sakinaka and Byculla, reports mentioned.

It has been reported that amid the high demand for English-medium schools among parents, the majority of the schools featured in the list provided teaching in English medium. Accounts suggest that there are four Marathi and Urdu-medium schools each and two Hindi-medium schools on the list.

The majority of these schools provide primary education that is till class 4, few also provide education till class 7 and 8. These schools have not acquired the requisite approval from the BMC and the state Education Department to operate.

An official from the BMC Education Department was quoted in narratives, elaborating on how the civic authority has reportedly communicated the list to the state Education Department. In addition to this, the official remarked that each school is liable to pay INR 1 lakh as a fine and the state education department which has the authority will have to issue the order.
