Certain reports speculate that the Maharashtra cabinet is likely to review the issue of reopening schools in its next meeting on Thursday, January 20. The government has been facing pressure from groups of parents as well as school associations who have petitioned that schools be reopened.
According to accounts, in certain parts of Maharashtra, schools opened on Tuesday, January 18, but the Maharashtra English School Trustees Association (MESTA), after meeting with leaders undertook the decision to put it off until the cabinet decides the next course of action.
Based on narratives, the Parents Association of Mumbai with the MESTA wrote an open letter to state chief minister Uddhav Thackeray and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Commissioner, Iqbal Singh Chahal asking that schools be reopened from January 24.
In light of the third wave of coronavirus, educational institutions were shut in the state till February 15. The associations question why schools are shut when the entire city is open.
It has been reported that state health minister Rajesh Tope met with the delegation of MESTA in Aurangabad and requested them to not take any measures that would violate COVID-19 protocols. He added that while it is clear that the rate of infection among children is low with rare cases of fatality, the concern is that they could act as carriers and infect senior citizens at home, remarked reports.
Tope further elaborated on how all viewpoints of parents, school associations, task force and other experts will be taken into account in the cabinet meeting this week and a review will be done.
