On Monday, November 15, the Maharashtra education department told all divisional-level officials to commence proclaiming notices of INR 1 lakh fine to those schools that haven’t implemented Marathi as a compulsory subject yet, highlighted accounts.

According to reports, the Maharashtra Compulsory Teaching and Learning of Marathi Language in Schools Act was initiated in June 2020. On one hand, whilst the state board schools were conducting classes for Marathi, non-state boards were asked to proclaim Marathi for grades 1 to 6 in a phased procedure.

These non-state boards include the Central Board of Secondary Education, Council of Indian School Certificate Examination, Cambridge Board International General Certificate of Secondary Education, International Baccalaureate and National Institute of Open Schooling.

In the present academic year, the subject has to be taught to grades 1, 2, 6 and 7. Based on the law, there is a provision of a fine of up to INR 1 lakh for non-compliance. However, amidst the second year of implementation, the state has attained complaints that the subject still hasn’t been initiated as compulsory in certain schools.

Considering that physical schools were non-operational due to the coronavirus induced lockdown, follow-up wasn’t initiated. In other developments, there have been reports of the possibility of state board exams for classes 10 and 12 in the offline mode.
