With the spike in cases of coronavirus across Maharashtra, schools in Mumbai have been urging the state education department to decrease the weightage of class 10 board examinations due to fear of not being allowed to resume operations soon.
According to reports, in recent times, several teachers and principals have requested the department to give 50 per cent weightage to internal examinations and the remaining 50 per cent to the written board examinations.
Meanwhile, schools in other parts of the state reopened for Classes 9 to 12, however, those in Mumbai are still not allowed to reopen due to the pending approval from Mumbai’s civic body, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). Furthermore, schools under consulates and embassies in Mumbai have been permitted to reopen from January 18, while other schools remain shut until further notice.
On the other hand, Maharashtra School Education Minister Varsha Gaikwad had earlier informed that she is to consult with Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray with regards to allowing school-going students on the Mumbai locals once classes resume.
Railway timings for the general public do not align with school or college hours, which is why the government said that it will approach the railways for more clarification on the matter. Trains are currently allowed for the general public prior to 6 AM, and between noon to 4 PM, and after 9 PM. The timing has been restricted to avoid crowding in view of the pandemic. This means the general public will not be permitted to travel between 7 am and 12 noon and between 4 pm and 9 pm, which are considered peak travel hours.
