In July, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) managed KEM Hospital, performed a historic heart transplant. This marked the first time a civic-run hospital in India successfully completed such a procedure. However, 40 days after the surgery, the patient, Mahesh Padav, died from complications related to the transplant.

Mahesh Padav, 38, underwent the heart transplant on July 12 at KEM Hospital. For 20 days after the surgery, he remained under close observation at the hospital. On August 1, doctors discharged him with a heart of a 60% pumping capacity.

Padav was taken back to his home in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar after his discharge. However, his condition worsened the next morning. He started having difficulty breathing and was unable to urinate.

In response, his family took him to Seth Nandlal Dhoot Hospital, where he was put on oxygen support. Despite this, he developed an infection that quickly turned into a high fever. On August 22, Padav passed away from the infection.

Before his transplant, Padav had been admitted to KEM Hospital over a month earlier for a serious cardiac condition. The transplant was made possible by a 34-year-old donor who donated his heart.

In the 1960s, KEM Hospital had made its first attempt at a heart transplant, which was unsuccessful. This led to a long pause in such procedures. The hospital received a tentative license for heart transplants in October 2023, which was fully recognised in December.
