The Jamshedjee Jeejeebhoy Group of Hospital (J.J. Hospital) situated in Mumbai was bestowed with ‘SAGES’ award for the third consecutive year since 2016. In 2016, a woman was diagnosed with Parathyroid Adenoma which was later treated by the endoscopic method at J.J. Hospital. This surgery resulted in the healing of the woman.

The surgery has been applauded and has been awarded the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES) award. Dr Deepak Sawant, Health Minister, took to Twitter to congratulate the hospital on receiving the award.

What is Parathyroid Adenoma?

A parathyroid adenoma is a benign tumour on one of your parathyroid glands. These are four very small glands located near or at the back of your thyroid gland. They produce parathyroid hormone (PTH). This hormone helps control the amount of calcium and phosphorus in your blood. A parathyroid adenoma causes the affected gland to release more PTH than it should. This disrupts your calcium and phosphorus balance.

The surgical operation of Shaheed Farhat, who resides in Grant Road was very challenging. The tumour contained in this woman was hidden inside the thyroid gland. Therefore, the pain caused to this woman in her back and bones were not diagnosed. This woman had even tried contacting many doctors before coming to the hospital.

When she came to the hospital, the head of the surgery department, a team of doctors under the guidance of Dr Ajay Bhandarwar examined her and found out that the tumour was in the thyroid gland situated in the throat.

The surgery was done after the tumour was removed from the jaw portion of the woman using the endoscopic method. As a result, no surgery has been done on the body part during this operation. Doctors from around the world will now imitate the similar surgical procedure.
