Mumbai’s civic body, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has liberalized its testing for the coronavirus conducting four lakh tests in just a month.

In comparison to the last six months, September has witnessed the highest number of tests for COVID-19. Currently, 13,000-15,000 tests are being done in a day. This includes reliable RTPCR tests as well as fast-acting antigen tests. Moreover, due to the increase in the number of tests, a large number of patients are being registered as well.

On the other hand, the BMC had earlier increased its containment zones to 674, while over 9,280 buildings and chawls have been sealed and are being self-managed by the society. The civic body had revised its containment zones criteria mandating sealing of buildings which have 10 or more cases in 2 or more floors. Moreover, the recent report shared by the BMC shows Borivali as the most affected place whereas the Sandhurst Road is the least affected ward.

The statistics shared by the Municipal have been noted down below:

  • Of the 11.44 lakh tests so far, half, or 52 per cent, have been in August and September alone.
  • 5.80 lakh tests were conducted in these two months.
  • An average of 3,872 tests was performed per day in May.
  • The same number had gone up to 4,422 in June.
  • In July, 7,000 tests were performed every day.
  • An average of 11,000 tests was being performed every day in September.
