As the number of coronavirus cases increases in Mumbai, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray will initiate a plasma donation program on the occasion of his birthday on July 27.

This comes after Shiv Sena MP Rahul Shewale organised a campaign for primary screening of persons who have recovered from COVID-19 in Mumbai’s Dharavi. The ‘Plasma Daan Sankalp Abhiyan’ aims to get plasma from recovered persons to treat those who are critical due to the coronavirus.

Dharavi is one of the biggest slums in Asia with a population of nearly seven lakh people residing in an area of just 2.5 square kilometres. After reporting its first case, Dharavi has come a long way from being one of the major COVID-19 hotspots to ‘flattening the curve’.

Shewale informed that the plasma donation drive will be launched on the occasion of Thackeray’s 60th birthday on July 27 and nearly 50 people who recovered from COVID-19 have been primarily screened in Dharavi.

Nearly 500 COVID-19 recovered persons have come forward to donate plasma and 50 people have already been screened, Shewale said while adding that people of Dharavi have successfully won the fight against the coronavirus and are now ready to win the hearts.

Recently, the World Health Organisation (WHO) has also praised the efforts of the administration here to contain the spread of the coronavirus in Mumbai. According to the official data by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, Dharavi has reported 2,519 COVID-19 cases till Friday while 2,141 people have recovered.

Maharashtra Public Health Minister Rajesh Tope informed that the government is planning to start a plasma donation drive in Malegaon and Dharavi. People are being encouraged to donate plasma which can save the lives of others who have contracted COVID-19, he added.
