After the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) workers on Monday raided the godown in Navi Mumbai and destroyed the sugar bags which were imported from Pakistan, Opposition leader Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil slammed the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Shiv Sena over the import of sugar.
Patil said that the country is producing sufficient sugar and still the government imports sugar from Pakistan. However, the government did not act on it. Further, Patil added that with this huge amount of sugar in this country, will the Shiv Sena and BJP government go from house to house to distribute it for free?
Earlier, he had demanded the government to increase the tax on the import of sugar. The country’s farmers are already producing an excess amount of sugar, to an extent, that the price in the market has started to come down from Rs 3150 to Rs 2550 per quintal. He further informed that stock from the previous year is also kept untouched in the godowns, questioning the need to import sugar as the farmers are suffering from losses.
The banks have stopped giving loans to the farmers and because of this, they are unable to get prices for their crops according to fair and remunerative price (FRP). Patil said that the government should subsidize the rates for the export of sugar.
Earlier in the day, NCP MLA Jitendra Awhad along with the party workers went in a godown and tore the sugar bags imported from Pakistan. The godown was located in Dahisar Mori area of Navi Mumbai. However, the police informed that they have registered a case against the NCP activists. Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) has already opposed the import of sugar from Pakistan and MNS leaders warned the wholesalers in Vashi to not distribute the imported sugar.
These developments in Maharashtra politics comes after the former Prime Minister of Pakistan, Nawaz Sharif, admitted Pakistan’s role in the 26/11 attacks. Several parties have come against the import of sugar from Pakistan and are criticising the ruling government.
