The Maharashtra government may reimburse the fees paid by students from the Maratha community who have applied for admissions in medical courses. This will be done to extend the financial benefits the Maratha students would have got under reservation.

Maharashtra Minister Amit Deshmukh said that his department will move a proposal in this regard before the cabinet. Deshmukh is the state medical education minister.

The state government is under a lot of pressure from the Maratha community after the Supreme Court imposed a stay on the implementation of the Maratha reservation in September this year. Therefore, it may consider reimbursing the students who applied for medical courses to extend financial benefits.

Deshmukh informed that the proposal to reimburse fees will be moved before the cabinet but the final decision on the same remains with Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray.

Maharashtra Public Works Department (PWD) Minister Ashok Chavan recently informed that the government has requested the Supreme Court against to form a constitutional bench to hear the Maratha reservation case. Chavan heads the cabinet sub-committee on Maratha reservation issue.

Earlier, the state government had filed a vacation application seeking the cancellation of the interim stay imposed by the Supreme Court on the implementation of the reservation to Maratha community in government jobs and education.

The interim stay on the implementation of Maratha reservation provided under Socially and Educationally Backward Classes (SEBC) category has affected recruitment and admission process of the state government.

The Maratha outfits in Maharashtra have been successful in maintaining pressure on the state government. They have also protested against the Uddhav Thackeray government in parts of the state.
