Cases have been registered under various sections at the Khar police station in Mumbai against famous comedian Kunal Kamra for presenting a satirical poem on Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. While Mumbai Police was searching for Kunal Kamra, Kunal approached the Madras High Court. The Madras Court has granted him interim bail. Meanwhile, Khar Police has summoned Kunal Kamra for questioning. He has not appeared at the Khar police station despite being summoned twice.
Kunal Kamra hosted a stand-up comedy show, ‘Naya Bharat’, at ‘The Habitat’ studio in the ‘Unicontinental’ hotel in Mumbai on February 2. In this show, he presented a satirical poem on Eknath Shinde. The police have also issued notices to the audience who were present at the show. Can the police serve notices to spectators?
The Mumbai Police has served notices to spectators under Section 179 of the Indian Penal Code. Under this section, the police have the power to summon spectators for questioning. Former IPS officer and lawyer YP Singh told The Times of India that the police have the right to call one or two viewers of the show for questioning. However, in this case, there is no need to call the viewers for questioning as electronic evidence is available.
