Mumbaikars, if you also travel by auto rickshaw, then this news is very important for you. While travelling by auto rickshaw, passengers often face harassment from the drivers, sometimes taking the wrong or long route to increase the metre, charging half the fare for a short distance, arguing unnecessarily, and many such things. While travelling by rickshaw, sometimes it feels like the metre is running faster than the distance covered. At this time, customers realise that they are being cheated, but do not understand how to prove it. In that case, you become a victim of the rickshaw driver’s scam.

However, now the Mumbai Traffic Police has posted a video to prevent the cheating of customers by the rickshaw drivers, in which the Mumbai Police has given detailed information on how to identify faulty metres.

What exactly did the Mumbai traffic police say?

Mumbai Traffic Police has shown with a video how the autorickshaw drivers cheat the passengers by tampering with the metre. The metre in the rickshaw in this video is called horse metre. That is, the metre running at the speed at which the horse runs. You can see in the video how fast the metre is running in the rickshaw standing in one place. That means the rent amount is increasing second by second. There is a button behind the handle of the rickshaw to increase the speed of this metre. When this button is started by the rickshaw driver, the metre runs at high speed, if it is turned off, the metre runs at normal speed. However, how the customer will know whether the metre is on or off has also been mentioned.

How to recognise that the rickshaw fare is increasing rapidly?

A small dot on the metre blinks to indicate that the rickshaw is being driven too fast. A small dot blinks after the last digit on the metre as soon as the driver presses the button to accelerate the metre.

That is, if the fare of INR 100.00 is shown on the metre and the button to run the metre is activated, then at the end of the amount shown on the metre, a dot like this INR 100.00. will appear. This should let you know that the driver has activated the metre override button. Thus if you are also cheated then you can report the concerned rickshaw driver along with his rickshaw number to the nearest RTO office.

“Be aware!”, appeals Mumbai Traffic Police

In another post, the Mumbai Traffic Police said that legal action has been initiated against the rickshaw driver for tampering with the metre. Legal action includes FIR, cancellation of permit and seizure of vehicle. Meanwhile, many have called for the removal of metres from rickshaws and the introduction of mobile applications like Ola, Uber, which they believe can prevent fraud.
