In a major relief to motorists, the Maharashtra government has announced the extension of the toll concession for the Atal Setu bridge, which connects Sewri-Nhava Sheva, for a year.
The state cabinet on Tuesday, January 28, approved the extension of this toll concession.
Initially, the toll for the six-lane trans harbour bridge, which spans 21.8 km, was set at INR 500. However, the state government had provided a concession of INR 250 for a period of one year. It will now remain in place until December 2025.
As per a data revealed by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) in an RTI query, the country’s longest sea bridge, Mumbai Trans Harbour Link, connecting the island city to Raigad district, has collected toll amounting to over INR 22 crore in around three and a half months since its inauguration.
According to the report, a total of 11,07,606 vehicles passed through the Atal Setu between January 12 and April 23, 2024, which led to collection of INR 22.57 crore as toll during the period.
Of the total, more than 10 lakh vehicles that passed were cars/jeeps/vans, while the rest were mini-buses and multi-axle vehicles.
Cars, jeeps, and vans using the bridge generated the highest revenue, amounting to more than INR 20 crore, it added.
For the unversed, the Atal Setu, which connects the city of Mumbai with Navi Mumbai, was officially inaugurated on January 12, 2024, by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
