Local trains are being expanded at a faster pace. Measures are being taken by the railway administration to reduce congestion in Mumbai suburbs. A new 29.6 km route is being constructed between Panvel and Karjat under Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP) 3. 56% work of this project has started. The work of laying gravelless track in the tunnels of the new Karjat-Panvel Suburban Railway Corridor has started.


This new route is being constructed between Karjat-Panvel. There are three tunnels on this railway line and the New Australian tunnelling method is being used for undergrounding the tunnels. At present, the work of laying ballastless tracks in the tunnels of this project has started. Meanwhile, work is underway on shelter areas, a tunnel control system, lighting system, fire fighting system. The project is expected to be completed by December 2025.

Corridor up to 29.6 km will be constructed between Panvel-Karjat. The 2 km long Waverly Tunnel has been completed on the same route. This tunnel is the longest on the Mumbai Suburban Railway line. After the completion of this project, the congestion in Thane-Kalyan station will be reduced by a large number. Priority will be given to mail-express trains on this route. At the same time, local trains will also be released between Mumbai and Karjat via Panvel.


There will be 5 stations on the route between Mumbai and Karjat. Panvel, Chikle, Mahape, Chowk and Karjat will be the five stations on the route between Panvel and Karjat. The total length of the railway line is 30 km and flyover 2 will be constructed. So, 44 bridges will be constructed including 8 big bridges and 36 small bridges. The total expenditure under MUTP-3 will be INR 10,947 crores. The project was approved in 2016. So, the deadline for this is going to be 2025. After the completion of this project, it will decongest Kalyan and Thane stations.
