MMRDA inaugurates Italy-made road-cum-rail mover loco-tractor

With this, MMRDA has initiated its first step towards the start of trial runs of Metro Line 2A (Dahisar to DN Nagar, Andheri) and Line 7 (Andheri East to Dahisar East) scheduled from January 14 onwards.

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) on Saturday, December 5, inaugurated the rail-cum-road mover loco tractor at its Charkop metro depot.

The Italian model road-cum-rail mover loco-tractor was unveiled by the MMRDA Commissioner R A Rajeev and other metro officials. Adeshree Thakare became the first female train operator to start this machine at Charkop metro depot.

The MMRDA is set to receive the first metro rake by mid of this month from Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML), Indian manufacturer.

This road cum-rail-mover (RMM) and diesel shunting loco tractor will haul eight-car train sets with radio remote control and hydraulically actuated braking system facilitating the shunting operations for maintenance of electric metro train at Charkop Metro Depot workshop, said officials.

With this, MMRDA has initiated its first step towards the start of trial runs of Metro Line 2A (Dahisar to DN Nagar, Andheri) and Line 7 (Andheri East to Dahisar East) scheduled from January 14 onwards.

The rail-cum-road mover is battery operated vehicle fitted with a three-phase electric motor, powered through a VVVF control drive. When the battery is fully charged, it can work upto 20 kms under no load condition and up to 9 km with a full load. The shunting operation of a separate car is capable of carrying on the side rails. The battery recharging time is 10 hrs from the fully discharge condition of the battery while the battery life equivalent to 1500 charging cycle.

It can work on railways as well as roads. The diesel shunting locomotives will make it possible for a train set, a personal car to move or be carried without electricity.

According to officials, the diesel shunting loco are equipped with various features and advanced safety measures. This will help in maintaining the performance of metro trains as well as for important maintenance work. The department also claims that this will ensure safe and easy travel as well as help in achieving MMRDA's goal in Mumbai in minutes.
