Coronavirus cases in Mumbai are reducing and keeping the same in mind, the state government of Maharashtra along with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has allowed some activities to resume as a part of the unlock initiative.

However, officials have noted an increase in the crowd across the market areas; and Mumbaikars are being shocked by the parking rates imposed by the BMC. This is because the contractors associated with the BMC are demanding an extremely high price for parking, from some residents of Churchgate. Furthermore, it has been noted that the rates are also being decided based on the car and this has raised concerns among the citizens.

Reports state that instead of implementing a parking policy, the BMC should consider providing relief to the citizens whereby appropriate rates and fair pricing should be imposed for parking in these areas. According to an incident at Churchgate, a BMC contractor has demanded Rs 5,500 per month from the locals for parking their vehicles on roads outside their homes. Basically, the parking rates of Mumbai Municipal Corporation have been in dispute for a long time, and in order to get a spot, one has to pay a hefty amount based on the vehicle owned.

To make it easier, the corporation has divided the parking allocations into commercial, semi-commercial and residential parking. Besides this, officials are considering to impose a similar model across Mumbai, and it is said that orders have been issued to 24 Divisional Commissioners regarding the same.

Currently, BMC contractors have started charging exorbitant parking rates at some places in South Mumbai. However, the division between commercial and semi-commercial has added to the confusion. On the other hand, coronavirus lockdown has raised concerns among the citizens over the last eight months, and the ongoing parking woes have only added to the existing worries.
