The Urban Development Minister and Thane District Guardian Minister Eknath Shinde on Thursday, March 26, directed the Chief Secretary of the state to file a consent term in the High Court to give concrete form to the project of constructing an expanded Thane railway station on the site of a regional Mental hospital. The minister was speaking at the meeting held at Sahyadri Guest House.

The meeting was attended by Chief Secretary Sitaram Kunte through a video conference. Besides, Bhushan Gagrani, Principal Secretary of Urban Development Department, Vipin Sharma, Thane Municipal Commissioner, Dr. Sadhana Tayde, Thane District Surgeon among others were also present there.

In the meeting, Eknath Shinde said that in view of congestion due to the growing population at Thane railway station, it is appropriate to expand the railway station on the site of the Regional Mental Hospital for the safety of passengers.

According to reports, a few years ago, the Indian Railways had decided to construct the Kopri railway station between Thane and Mulund station to reduce the Thane station's load. The cost of the station is INR 289 crores and will be funded under the Smart City project.

Meanwhile, the Health Department had also agreed to hand over the land—which was meant for the Mental Hospital—to Indian Railways. Hence, the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) was roped in to rehabilitate people who reside on the same land. The TDR was given to the Health Department.

“TMC is going to construct three buildings for the hospital. The work has been pending for five to six years now and it should be noted that the cost of the project is also increasing due to the delay,” he added.
