In response to a tragic incident that claimed the lives of four boys who drowned in the Arabian Sea, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has announced enhanced security measures at popular beaches in Mumbai.
The civic body has deployed 120 trained security guards at various beaches and seafronts across the city. The security officers will be stationed from 8 am to 11 pm, covering the beaches of Girgaon and Dadar in the island city, as well as Juhu, Versova, Aksa, and Gorai in the western suburbs.
This development came in the wake of cyclone Biparjoy, which has affected the coastline. The weather department has alerted the citizens of the high tide and light showers across the city.
To maintain round-the-clock vigilance, 60 security guards will be deployed from 8 am to 4 pm, with another 60 taking over from 3 pm to 11 pm.
In addition to the security guards, lifeguards will also be on duty in shifts to ensure the safety of beachgoers.
The recent incident that prompted the deployment of security guards occurred at Juhu Koliwada. Five youngsters, aged between 12 and 15, ventured into the sea earlier this week. Tragically, four boys drowned, while one was rescued by local fishermen.
Mumbai has a 145-kilometre coastline and is home to six large beaches.
