The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) authorities will install CCTV cameras at 60 locations to stop the unlawful dumping of building and demolition waste. The cameras will be placed in areas where garbage is regularly discarded.

A tender for the installation of these cameras will be released next month. So far, there are 100 to 150 metric tonnes of debris from roadsides every day. This is because people dump the debris at night. Despite efforts from civic teams in various wards, unlawful dumping has not decreased.

In February, R Central ward launched a pilot project to install CCTV cameras at five locations. However, technical issues and the Lok Sabha elections in June caused delays. The project had to be scrapped.

Now, the civic government plans to install 60 CCTV cameras in three key locations: P/North (Malad West), K/West (Andheri West), and R/Central (Borivali East and West). A control centre will be set up in the respective ward offices to check these areas.

The CCTV cameras will provide exact location data and images, helping authorities find and punish violators. Despite the BMC offering an on-call service for lifting and disposing of construction waste at nominal rates, debris continues to be dumped on roads in the civic wards.
