The contract of a private contractor has been withdrawn due to damage to the steps leading to the Banganga Lake in Walkeshwar, Mumbai. After this, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has started the process of inviting fresh tenders for the rest of the restoration work of the Banganga lake.
This time, the work will be completed in three phases. Meanwhile, the Harbour Engineering Department under the Public Works Department (PWD) will focus on working on the 11th century Ram Kunda. However, it will be a challenge for the BMC to complete this work by March 2025. The pace of the work had slowed down, especially after the stairs were damaged in June this year.

Despite a ban by the Project Management Consultant and the Directorate of Archeology and Museums, the contractor damaged the steps to the Banganga Lake by using an excavator for decontamination work on June 24. Following this incident, a criminal case was registered against three persons from the contractor company, which sparked outrage among citizens and heritage activists.
A show cause notice was issued to the contractor for unauthorised use of heavy machinery. After that, the BMC promptly repaired the damaged steps. Learning from this experience, instead of appointing two contractors, the municipal administration has decided to divide the work into separate departments.
