By integrating a centralised helpline for the city and suburbs into the MYBMC app, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has redesigned its debris on-call services some 10 years later. The online service, which will soon be accessible around-the-clock, will provide free pickup for up to 500 kg of small-scale and home waste.

The civic body will be the first municipal corporation in the nation to provide this service digitally, which is noteworthy. The debris will also be processed by two cutting-edge facilities that can process up to 1,200 tonnes of material in total. The municipal organisation had previously launched a debris collection helpline in 2014, but the project was not well received by the public.

For a long time, the BMC has been fighting to stop the unlawful disposal of debris on public roads and areas, especially at night when construction rubbish is dumped by unknown people. Special squads have been established at the ward level by the civic authority to monitor and combat such actions in their particular areas in order to solve this issue.

The municipal corporation previously implemented Debris on Call services to address the issue, allowing residents to have construction rubbish picked up and disposed of for a small cost. Nevertheless, unlawful dumping continues in a number of places, and criminals frequently evade detection at night.

The civic body has now chosen to incorporate this service within the MYBMC app, making it accessible online in addition to the current hotline, in order to improve accessibility and promote broader use.

By choosing their area on the app, citizens can make service requests, which will prompt a Junior Supervisor (JS) to conduct a site inspection. Details will be provided through the app once the debris has been evaluated and costs have been determined.

The app allows for online payments, and both digital and WhatsApp receipts are available. The JS will provide a receipt for cash payments made offline. Debris will be picked up within 48 hours of payment confirmation, providing a quick and effective way to deal with illegal dumping.

The debris's sand-like leftovers will be used to make non-structural products, including benches, pavement stones, dividers, and paver blocks. The contractors in charge of the procedure have been given this duty.

Helpline: 1800-202-6364 is the toll-free number for the city and eastern suburbs, and the number for the suburban western area is 1800-210-9976. The hours of operation for the hotline numbers are 8 am to 8 pm. There are no fees for collecting up to 500 kg of garbage.

Debris collection and processing from Colaba to Sion and Kurla to Mulund will be handled by M/s Metro Waste Handling Pvt Ltd. In Daighar village, Shilphata, they have set up a facility that can produce up to 600 tonnes per day.

The Bandra to Dahisar region has also been assigned to M/S AG Enviro Infra Pvt Ltd, which will establish a plant at Kokanipada, Dahisar, with an extra capacity of 600 tonnes per day.
