On Friday, the BMC stated that the patients above 50 years with comorbidities will be persuaded to take up institutional quarantine, however, the ones without any serious symptoms can be under home quarantine.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has relaxed its order on compulsory institutional quarantine for patients suffering from the coronavirus above the age of 50.

On Friday, the civic body stated that the patients above 50 years with comorbidities will be persuaded to take up institutional quarantine, however, the ones without any serious symptoms can be under home quarantine if they wished.

The highest fatality rate in Mumbai has been clocked between the age group of 50-60 years of age, with most cases recording a history of comorbidities. In view of this, institutional isolation was earlier made mandatory for older age groups by the civic body.

Meanwhile, on Saturday, August 22, Mumbai recorded 1,134 fresh cases of the coronavirus with 32 new deaths. The city also saw 1,101 recoveries taking its cured tally to 1,09,369. Mumbai's tally at the moment stands at 1,35,357 of which 18,298 are active and 7,385 are fatalities.

However, the city is witnessing a steady rise in its recovery rate - standing at 81 per cent now while its growth rise slowed to 0.82 per cent. The civic body further shared data which stated that 6,97,368 samples have been tested till date with a 19.24 per cent positivity rate. Moreover, according to BMC's war room report, 139 of 912 ventilator beds were vacant, while 239 of 1431 ICU beds were vacant.
