The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is laying down pumps to solve the problem of water logging in low-lying areas of the city during monsoons. But many of these pumps often fail during heavy rains, causing waterlogging and causing inconvenience to citizens.
As a solution to this problem, the BMC has decided to purchase mobile dewatering pumps this year. The civic officials have claimed that these mobile pumps, which can be easily shifted to the affected areas, will help in proper drainage of water. In the last monsoon, the BMC operated 481 dewatering pumps, up from 477 in 2023.
The civic body spent INR 1.25 crore on these pumps during two monsoons. These pumps help to carry water accumulated in low-lying areas to city drains.
On 7 July 2024, heavy rains inundated 100 areas in Mumbai, with pumps installed to remove the water failing in some places which caused great inconvenience. According to municipal data, a total of 453 flood-prone places were identified, of which 369 have already been completed. The remaining 55 flood-prone areas will be worked on in phases, starting in 2025 and continuing till 2026.
Instructions have been given to contractors and ward officials to ensure that all dewatering pumps remain fully functional during monsoons, a senior official added.
