Union Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan on Friday, June 3, has written to the health secretaries of five states including Maharashtra over increasing number of coronavirus cases in these states.

In his letter to Telangana Secretary (Health), Maharashtra Additional Chief Secretary (Health), Karnataka Principal Secretary (Health), Kerala Principal Secretary (Health) and Tamil Nadu Principal Secretary (Health), Rajesh Bhushan has asked them to maintain a strict watch and take pre-emptive action if required to control any emerging spread of infection. It further asked the states to monitor localised spread of infection in each state.

This comes after the single-day rise in new coronavirus infections was recorded above 4,000 after nearly three months on Friday. Meanwhile, Maharashtra’s daily caseload has seen spike with over 1,000 cases at 1134. On the other hand, Mumbai has recorded over 700 cases for the third consecutive day with 763 fresh cases today.

As per the letter, six districts in Maharashtra have reported an uptick in new cases and COVID-19 test positivity rate over the last few days.

According to a latest data revealed by the Union government shows that even though 24 states and Union Territories on Friday recorded the rise in COVID-19 cases. However, the highest daily rise was from Kerala and Maharashtra. Kerala also has the highest load of coronavirus cases, followed by Maharashtra.

It is also pertinent to note that Mumbai is currently accounting for the majority of Maharashtra’s daily coronavirus cases. Therefore, as precautionary measure, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) officials have asked all hospitals and COVID centres in the city to be ready to combat any further spread of the virus.

Besides, he also assured these states that the Centre would continue to provide all support required to contain the pandemic.
