In order to avoid mishaps regarding people falling in manholes during the rains, the manholes are being covered with steel nets by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). As per the BMC officials, 1425 manholes have been shielded so far with steel nets between Sion and Colaba. BMC declared that they are all set to avoid any mishaps during the monsoons. The information about the manholes was given by the municipal corporation during the hearing of a petition at the Bombay High Court.

During the floods in August last year, Dr Deepak Amrapurkar, residing in Elphinstone had died drowning in a manhole, because the manhole was open and he was unable to spot it. The Retail Welfare Association had filed a petition in the court considering BMC responsible for the incident and demanded action against the responsible officials.

During the hearing last week, the High Court asked the BMC about the number of manholes that were secured with steel nets. Along with this, the court had ordered BMC to present the report about the number of steel nets that were put on manholes before June 21.

On Thursday, BMC presented the report which stated the number of steel nets and also gave details of the measures taken by the municipal corporation which included six pumping stations that will help to drain the water on the streets. They have also instated 36 lifeguards on the sea-coasts of Mumbai.

The next hearing for the petition is scheduled to happen by July 18.
