On Wednesday, a Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) employee passed away while undergoing treatment for coronavirus. Alongside, six BEST employees tested positive for COVID-19 on Wednesday, taking the total of positive BEST employees to 55.

The employee who succumbed to coronavirus was on duty as a starter for BEST Corporation and was admitted to hospital on May 4. Meanwhile, among the six new cases, four of them were employees from BEST's transport wing and one each was from the Repairs Department and Electric Department respectively. 

Following the rise in the number of cases in BEST, the authorities had arranged for the medical examination of 8,865 employees and distributed vitamins to 5,000 employees on May 3, Sunday. 

The BEST buses are the only public transport services that are functional and while the BEST employees have been providing crucial services by ferrying essential employees, they are also at risk of contracting the disease.

Mumbai's BEST bus services have been beneficial during the coronavirus outbreak. It has helped doctors, nurses, government officers and other essential workers reach their workplaces on time. Every day, amidst the lockdown, BEST has been running 1,300 buses in Mumbai thereby playing an important role in the crisis.
