The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has resumed the Instrument Landing System (ILS) trial at the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) on August 12, after the trial was delayed last month due to heavy rains.

The test will delay flights arriving at Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) between 11 am and 4 pm on Tuesday, August 13.

An AAI official told Hindustan Times that air traffic controllers will be delayed in coming to Mumbai to manage air traffic congestion in the city. As a result, only 18 flights will take off compared to the usual 22 to 25 flights. However, flights departing from Mumbai will not be affected.

ILS testing is an important part of operational readiness, ensuring that aircraft can land accurately using this system. A report will be submitted for further processing after the test is completed and the route calibrated. Several additional tests and clearances are required before the runway at Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) becomes fully operational.

NMIA is scheduled to start operations in March 2025. Also next month, its first aircraft will land as part of a test run by the Indian Air Force. This is important for the airport. Which on completion is expected to handle a large number of passengers and cargo.

All you need to know about NMIA:

Navi Mumbai Airport or DB Patil International Airport, named after farmer and Labor Party leader late Dinkar Balu Patil, will be India's first civil aviation airport in Juhu and the third international airport in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region after Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport.

In its initial phase, NMIA will have the capacity to handle 20 million passengers per year and 0.5 million metric tonnes of cargo annually. The first and second phases will have a runway, a terminal building and a passenger capacity of 20 million. Also future phases (3, 4 and 5) will see a second runway, four terminals and significant increase in passenger capacity to 90 million per annum.
