Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh informed that the state government has decided to send Palghar Superintendent of Police (SP) Gaurav Singh on compulsory leave. This decision comes after 21 days of the Palghar mob lynching incident in which two sadhus and their driver were killed by an angry mob.

On Thursday, Anil Deshmukh visited the Gadchinchile village in Palghar district where the mob lynching took place on April 16. Three people including two sadhus from Mumbai were killed on the suspicion of being thieves and child kidnappers.

The Palghar incident became a political issue after Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath called up Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray demanding strict action against the accused. The Maharashtra government earlier arrested 115 people and warned those trying to give the mob lynching a communal colour.

During his visit, the state Home Minister met the local representative in the area after which the Maharashtra government decided to send Palghar SP Gaurav Singh on compulsory leave.

In a video message, Deshmukh informed that the charge will be given to the additional SP of Palghar. “I met the public representatives there, the MLA, MP, gram panchayat members and others. After that the state government decided to send SP Gaurav Singh on compulsory leave,” the state home minister added.

The Palghar case is now being investigated by the Crime Investigation Department (CID) of the Maharashtra Police. Deshmukh informed that instructions to take strict action against the accused in Palghar incident have been given.

The mob had planned to burn the three alive in their vehicles as they were searching for kerosene to set their vehicle on fire, Chitra Chowdhary of the BJP told. Chowdhary is the sarpanch of the village where the mob lynching happened.

Earlier, the Maharashtra government had suspended five policemen from the Kasa police station including the station in-charge and his deputy. Moreover, 35 another police personnel, mostly constables, had been transferred from the police station amid allegations of lapses and inaction that led to the lynching incident. Anil Deshmukh informed that the police were aware of the rumours of ‘child kidnappers’ and ‘thieves’ floating around.
