Weather Update: Heavy rainfall to continue in Mumbai, Thane till September 26

In the 24 hours ending at 8.30 am on September 25, Mumbai recorded 74 mm rainfall, as per TOI reports. For the unversed, according to the IMD's classification, rainfall recorded between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm falls in the heavy rain category.

With the monsoon retreating, Mumbai is experiencing moderate rainfall along with thunderstorms from last two days. 

As heavy rain continued to lash several parts of the city, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued red alert for Mumbai, Thane, and Palghar till Thursday, September 26 warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds at isolated locations.

The Met Department further stated that there's a possibility of "very heavy rainfall at isolated places towards night and early morning".

Besides, for September 26, the weather bureau has issued a red alert for other districts across Maharashtra, forecasting extremely heavy rainfall and thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds at isolated places being very likely.

For the unversed, according to the IMD's classification, rainfall recorded between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm falls in the heavy rain category.

The current weather pattern is marked by thunderstorm activity, resulting in short but intense bursts of rain leading to waterlogging. Owing to this, on Wednesday afternoon, the Andheri subway was closed for short span of duration. Moreover, Mulund, Thane, Panvel, Kharghar, and Kamothe saw intense rainfall activity.

It is pertinent to note that in the early hours of Tuesday, September 24, Mumbai recorded its first heavy rain spell for the month of September.

An IMD official noted that most of this rain occurred between 2:30 am and 4:30 am on Tuesday and Wednesday night. Residents reported being awakened by the sudden onset of heavy rain and loud thunder.

Weekly forecast:

IMD in its latest weather update stated that the rains are likely to subside by Friday (September 27) and Saturday (September 28), issuing a green alert for the city for the weekend.

From September 26 to 28, temperatures will slightly rise and moderate rain is expected. On September 29 and 30, temperatures will hover around 26 degrees Celsius to 31 degrees Celsius, with lesser rain likely. Overall, residents should prepare for wet weather throughout the week.
