In an innovative initiative by a member of the Legislative Assembly, Mumbai got its first Divyang park at Kandivali, exclusively for specially-abled children. The park will provide touch-based sensory play, music therapy and dance therapy to meet the mental and physical needs of specially-abled children.

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari laid the foundation stone of India's first Divyang park in Nagpur. Such a park will have 21 different types of physical and mental challenges. However, Mumbai got its first such park as Kandivali MLA Atul Bhatkhalkar inaugurated this unique playing park.

Divyang Udyan, a brainchild of Bhatkhalkar, has become the first open play area, especially for children with physical and mental challenges. Inaugurated on Friday at Ashok Nagar in Kandivali (UP), the park provides children with touch-based sensory play, music and dance therapy, a dedicated garden and a specially-abled toilet.

Bhatkhalkar said, “We often don't realise that a garden for special children with special needs is not specially designed for them. They cannot play and enjoy in normal gardens and they need special gardens which can scientifically help their body and mind. This park will give them an opportunity to make a positive change in their personality.”
