The First-Class Judicial Magistrate and Civil Judge (junior division) court in Mira Road has seen many delays since it was approved over a decade ago. In response, the local lawyers have threatened to begin a hunger strike if the court is not opened within two months.
This court would handle legal matters for residents of the twin cities. Despite the completion of construction, the court has missed several deadlines and is still not operational. Bureaucratic delays are holding up the hiring process and getting the necessary financial resources.
Local lawmakers and legal entities have issued many reminders, but these efforts have not resolved the issues. They have now become very frustrated. They have also suggested boycotting the upcoming assembly elections as a form of protest.
The court's construction began after government approval in 2013. It took seven years to build on a 4,353-square metre plot in the Hatkesh area of Mira Road. Another three years were needed for interior work, including design, furniture, and fixtures.
The state public works department (PWD) was responsible for building the court complex. They have already received a partial occupancy certificate (OC) from the Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC).
In 2020, Mira-Bhayandar and Vasai Virar merged to create the commissionerate status of the former rural police force. The MBVV police now oversee 18 police stations. The twin cities have seen a high number of reported crimes each year. This growth puts a strain on the district's resources.
Litigants often travel to the Thane court for civil and criminal hearings. The police also have to transport suspects and accused individuals over long, congested routes.
