The Maharashtra government on Monday, September 30, issued an order declaring the cow as the 'Rajya Mata' (State mother). The government took this step citing the cultural significance of cows in the Indian tradition.
In the official order, the Eknath Shinde-led government said that the cow has been an important part of the Indian tradition and has had spiritual, scientific and military significance since ancient times.

Highlighting the various breeds of cows found across India, the Maharashtra government also expressed concern over the decrease in the number of native cows.
The government's statement noted the sacredness of cow milk, urine, and dung, which are utilized extensively in various cultural practices. Cow milk is recognized for its nutritional benefits, while cow urine is believed to possess medicinal properties, contributing to traditional healing practices.
Cows hold a revered status in Hinduism, often viewed as a mother figure. In addition to the cultural implications, the Maharashtra government underscored the agricultural benefits of cow dung, which enhances soil fertility and contributes to human nutrition. By advocating for the preservation of indigenous breeds, the government aims to bolster the agricultural sector and promote sustainable farming practices.
