On Sunday, May 30, amidst the second wave of the coronavirus, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray announced the extension of the lockdown in the state by 15 days.

During his address, CM Thackeray also informed that so far as many as 3,000 cases of mucormycosis, also know as black fungus, have been reported in the state.

Moreover, according to reports, a total of 77 COVID-19 recovered patients were diagnosed with the rare fungal infection in Pune district last week. The number of people diagnosed with the invasive fungal infection in the region has gone up to 694 — within the last two months. A total of 48 patients have succumbed so far and 126 have recovered from the infection, which mainly attacks the sinuses. At least 520 are undergoing treatment at various hospitals in the district.

Meanwhile, more than 11,700 cases of mucormycosis have been detected in India as of May 25.

Besides, a few days ago, the Chief Minister's Office (CMO) released a statement and said: "Although the COVID-19 growth rate is slowly declining in Maharashtra, the number of patients in 10 to 15 districts is increasing rapidly, and there is also a risk of mucormycosis (black fungus). The number of patients had reached a record high in September last year. Today's number of patients in the state has come down to the same level as in September. But we have to be more careful.”

The Maharashtra government had earlier hinted at relaxing the curbs from June 1 in four phases. In addition, Relief and Rehabilitation Minister Vijay Wadettiwar mentioned while the government would not relax the strict curbs in the red zone that are active in the 15 districts, it would consider relaxation in other districts.
