A new mangrove park is set to open in Mumbai’s Gorai Creek on May 1. The Maharashtra Forest Department’s Mangrove Cell is developing the project. The park will also include a 740-meter walkway, a nature interpretation centre, and an 18-meter birdwatching tower. The goal is to educate visitors about the mangrove ecosystem and its biodiversity.
As per reports, more than 90% of the work is complete. The remaining tasks are being completed quickly. The park will open on Maharashtra State Formation Day if the final work finishes on time.
The park covers eight hectares. The walkway goes through dense mangrove forests without cutting any trees. Visitors can explore the ecosystem while walking through the park. The birdwatching tower will allow nature lovers to observe a variety of bird species.
The nature interpretation centre will include interactive exhibits and a virtual reality system about mangroves. It will be a two-story building with a rooftop restaurant, a library, an audiovisual room, a gift shop, and workshop spaces.
The Maharashtra State Eco-Tourism Board has approved the project. It is designed with eco-friendly methods. The construction uses minimal concrete and includes a steel cantilever structure. Mangrove trees were preserved during development. Solar panels will generate 80% of its electricity. A sustainable sewage system is also in place.
This project began in 2021 with a budget of INR 23.63 crore. The park is expected to attract 400 visitors daily to the centre and 500 to the mangrove trail. Guided tours and birdwatching sessions will be available.
Mumbai has over 50 square km of mangroves. These ecosystems act as natural barriers against floods and storms. The 2004 tsunami and 2005 Mumbai floods showed the value of mangroves.
