Mumbai’s railway stations are undergoing major changes to handle increasing passenger traffic. With no space for horizontal expansion, authorities are building raised decks above platforms at 17 stations.

These decks will reduce platform congestion and improve passenger movement. They will also accommodate stalls and business booths at an elevated level.

The Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation (MRVC) is executing this project under the Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP-3A). The stations being upgraded are over 70-80 years old and need expansion. A feasibility study was conducted in 2022 by Knight Frank India to assess the economic potential of deck-level spaces.

All foot overbridges (FOBs) will be connected to these decks, forming a continuous network above platforms. This design will allow smooth passenger movement and prevent overcrowding at the platform level. Some stations will have additional deck space to relocate existing stalls and amenities.

Several stations will see major changes:

1. Dombivli will get a 210-metre-long and 15-metre-wide elevated deck with new FOBs on the north and south sides.

2. Ghatkopar's deck on the east side is completed, and work continues on the west side and CSMT end.

3. Bhandup will have a 228-metre-long and 8-metre-wide deck with north and south FOBs.

4. Kasara will get a 17-metre-long deck connected to a mega skywalk.

5. Mulund will have a 145-metre-long and 9.25-metre-wide deck with new FOBs at the north, middle, and south ends.

6. Neral will get three decks, a FOB, and a platform extension to improve access for tourists.

7. Chembur will have a new six-metre-wide middle bridge and deck connectors linking existing FOBs.

8. Mankhurd will feature a 235-metre-long and 9.6-metre-wide deck alongside platform 1, with two new FOBs.

9. Govandi will see elevated decks over the walkway, lifts, and platforms 1 and 2.

10. GTB Nagar will introduce a double-discharge platform.

11. Kandivli has a 4-metre-wide skywalk in use, with a 263-metre-long deck linking north and south FOBs.

12. Mira Road will have new north and middle FOBs on a 158.5-metre-long and 10.7-metre-wide platform.

13. Bhayandar will get a 259-metre-long and 22-metre-wide deck.

14. Santacruz will have an 80-metre-long and 12-metre-wide middle FOB.

15. Vasai Road will get a 160-metre-long and 11-metre-wide deck, with a 6-metre-wide FOB at the Churchgate end.

16. Nallasopara will have raised decks at the north and south ends of platform 1.

17. Khar has undergone a complete renovation with a new deck, FOBs, lifts, and escalators. The final station facade is nearing completion.

The project is set for phased completion. Mira Road, Khar, Kandivali, Kasara, and Neral are expected to be finished by 2025. Work at the remaining 12 stations will continue in phases until March 2027.
