The municipal administration has fined the clean up marshals itself who collect fines from Mumbaikars who throw garbage on the highway. The BMC has imposed a fine on the Clean Up Marshal organisation for the malpractice in the work. Additional Commissioner Ashwini Joshi scrutinized the clean-up marshal institutions at the municipal headquarters on Thursday, February 20. The civic body has started levying fines from the cleaning up marshal organisations that are doing the work. Seven of the twelve contractors have been fined and a total of INR 65 lakh will be recovered.
A meeting was held between the Solid Waste Management Department of the BMC and the representatives of the clean up marshal organisations appointed for cleanliness in mumbai under the 'Swachh Mumbai Abhiyan'. At that time, Additional Municipal Commissioner (City) Dr. Ashwini Joshi conducted clean-up marshalling of the contractor. The meeting was attended by Kiran Dighavkar, Deputy Commissioner (Solid Waste Management) of Solid Waste Management Institutions along with relevant officials.
Any harm to public cleanliness in Mumbai will not be tolerated. The clean up marshals assigned for cleaning operations should be made more active. While 30 clean up marshals have been appointed in each administrative division (ward), it is observed that less number of marshals are working in some places. Therefore, organisations of clean up marshals should immediately appoint 30 approved clean marshals in each department and take strict action against those causing unsanitary conditions.
During the last 11 months, clean up marshals have collected fines of 4 crore 54 lakh 51 thousand 412 rupees from 1 lakh 40 thousand 584 citizens. But in some sections, clean up marshal action is not seen at all. Therefore, Additional Municipal Commissioner Dr. Ashwini Joshi has given strict instructions to increase the number of penal actions against those who violate the rules of public cleanliness.
