The Mumbai fire bridge (MFB) has decided to induct a compact turntable ladder mounted fire engine that will be able to easily move through the narrow bylanes of the city.
This development comes in order to tackle fire mishaps in congested localities and densely populated slum pockets. Moreover, the MFB was solely dependent on the conventional jumbo tankers and fire engines which were larger in size and faced a hard time entering narrow lanes and bylanes of Mumbai.
The new fire engines are compact trucks, which can reach a maximum height of 30 meters equivalent to a 10-storey building.
The biggest advantage of this van is the reduction in response time. Even though this ladder is compact in size, its functionality is almost similar to the conventional fire trucks that are already present.
The fire engine will be sent to RTO for registration and will be deployed in service from next month.
It is manufactured by a German company and is marketed through Austrian firm Rosenbauer.
The capacity of the ladder is around 600 KG. Besides this, the rescue cage is also equipped with a ramp like feature that will allow safe rescue of the specially-abled and senior citizens as it can accommodate stretchers and wheelchairs, officials added.
