Mumbai is seeing a rise in animal cruelty cases, many of which are not being reported. Each year, 300-350 such incidents are reported in the city. Recent events show an increase in animal cruelty cases in Mumbai.
From April 1 to June 30, Mumbai recorded 67 cases of animal cruelty. Across India, 703 cases were reported in the same period. There is no complete database, hence the figure does not fully reflect the level of animal cruelty in the city.
Recently, there was a horse racing competition at Vile Parle on the Western Express Highway (WEH). People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) filed a complaint after the video of the event went viral. The video showed horses being cruelly lashed to pull carts.
A few days ago, two incidents occurred in Kandivali's Lokhandwala. Kunal Rupani, a car driver, was detained for running over a puppy. Another driver was booked for killing a pet dog.
There have been recent reports of street pets being assaulted, killed, or even targeted for contract killing.
Animal cruelty is prohibited by law, but these acts are often subject to bail. Activists have suggested that people would not harm animals if bail was not an option. According to the law, an animal's natural habitat is its birthplace. But, people do not understand this and consider animals a nuisance.
