Although 90 percent of water has accumulated in the dams that supply water to Mumbai, the water level has started to decrease gradually due to heavy rains in August. While there is already a 10 percent deficit in water storage, now the water level has started to decrease. As a result, the crisis of water scarcity has again deepened.

The seven dams that supply water to Mumbai namely Upper Vaitarna, Modaksagar, Tansa, Middle Vaitrana Reservoir, Bhatsa, Vihar and Tulsi need to have a useful water storage of 14 lakh 47 thousand 363 million liters to supply water to Mumbai metropolis. Only then it is possible for the Municipal Corporation to provide smooth water supply throughout the year. At present, 13 lakh 7 thousand 923 million liters i.e. 90.37 percent of the total storage capacity has accumulated in all the seven dams. There is still a 10 percent deficit in water storage. This year, due to unsatisfactory rainfall in the dam area that initially supplies water to Mumbai, the water storage had decreased during the monsoon season.

Keeping this situation in mind, the Mumbai Municipal Corporation administration had reduced the water supply of Mumbai by 10 percent from July 1, 2023 until the rainfall improved. Due to satisfactory rainfall in July, 10 percent water cut in Mumbai was canceled in August. But in the month of August, the rain stopped and the water level settled at 83 percent. The water level was rising little by little due to sporadic rains in the middle. Although the water storage has reached 90 percent, now the less rains have again affected the dam area. Therefore, the water level, which has been increasing so far, has started decreasing gradually from the last few days.

Meanwhile, the Meteorological Department has predicted that there is less chance of rain after September 15 and hence the BMC might apply water cut.
