Dadar's Shivaji Park is one of the popular localities in the city and the park is a venue used often for sports, cultural and political activities in the city. The park is visited by children, senior citizens and fitness enthusiasts on a daily basis. Authorities, over the last few months, have been planning about renaming the park, and the same was implemented recently.

As per updates, the earlier known Shivaji Park has now been renamed as 'Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Park,' and an official name change board has been put up by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).

Residents and the members of the park have been demanding a name change for many years and stated that the park should be named with respect, after the great Maratha Warrior Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, and not just be called 'Shivaji Park'. Moreover, the ruling party Shiv Sena has always been in favour of the same and has been wanting to change the name. Following these requests, a renaming proposal was submitted at the BMC in March and with the approval of this resolution, a new nameplate has been put up at the ground.

The park has a historic significance in Mumbai and as per records, it is over 100 years old. Earlier it was named as Mahim Park and was then changed, on May 10, 1927, whereby a resolution was passed in the BMC to name it as Shivaji Park. This time, it is after 73 years, that the park is once again renamed.

The park has been an important location in the flourishing journies of veteran sportspersons like Sachin Tendulkar and Vinod Kambli, and the 'Shivatirtha' ceremony of the by the late Shiv Sena chief Balasaheb Thackeray. It has been renowned for several years and continues to be.

Officials have been trying hard to maintain the park, however, until recently, it has been in the news as several snakes were spotted over many days. Park authorities are taking necessary action and steps to ensure safety.
