There are still four months before the monsoon season, but the seven lakes that provide water to the city are currently at 51% of their total capacity. This is a slight improvement compared to last year, when the lakes were at 50%, and the year before, when it was just 45%. However, officials are worried that rising temperatures may lead to increased evaporation, further reducing water levels.

Last year, the city faced water shortages in June and July, which led to a 10% water cut for two months, affecting the daily water supply. To address this, the BMC began drawing water from state reserves in the Bhatsa and Upper Vaitrana lakes in July to keep the water supply steady.

As of Monday, the seven lakes hold a total of 7.39 lakh million liters (ml) of water, which should last until the end of July. However, officials are concerned that the ongoing heat could speed up evaporation and reduce the water supply quickly.

The BMC has urged citizens to avoid wasting water. The municipality provides 3,950 ml of water daily from the seven lakes in Mumbai and Thane districts, while the city needs 14.47 lakh ml of water annually.
