The Maharashtra government has extended the deadline for installing High-Security Registration Plates (HSRP) on older vehicles. The new deadline is June 30, 2025. This applies to vehicles registered before April 1, 2019. The Transport Commissioner issued this order on Thursday, March 20.
Initially, the deadline was March 31, 2025. Due to slow implementation, it was first extended to April 30, 2025. Now, it has been extended again.
So far, around 18 lakh vehicles in Maharashtra have received HSRP plates. But many older vehicles still do not have the required number plates. The government has appointed three private agencies to manage the installation process. Vehicle owners can visit authorised centres or book appointments online.
Here is how to apply for HSRP:
- Visit www.transport.maharashtra.gov.in.
- Select the HSRP Online Booking link and enter the vehicle's registration details.
- Visit the approved HSRP provider’s website and enter their phone number and vehicle details.
- Choose a fitting location and make the online payment. Cash payments are not allowed.
- The plates will be installed at the selected fitment centre on the scheduled date.
The Maharashtra Transport Department has instructed all Regional Transport Officers (RTOs) and Deputy RTOs to run awareness campaigns. These officials must meet auto-rickshaw, taxi, bus, and truck associations. Vehicle dealers will also be informed about the deadline.
HSRP plates are tamper-proof and laser-etched with a unique identification number. These plates help track vehicles and prevent theft. They are mandatory for all vehicles registered before April 1, 2019.
Only HSRPs from approved suppliers will be valid. These will be updated on the VAHAN portal. According to Section 177 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, vehicles using unauthorised plates will be fined INR 1,000.
Here is the cost of HSRP by vehicle type:
- Two-wheelers: INR 450
- Three-wheelers: INR 500
- Four-wheelers and other vehicles: INR 745
