Indian Railways is celebrating 100 years since the first electric train journey between Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus and Kurla, which took place on February 3, 1925. The historic Kurla Car Shed, which played a key role in this journey, also marks its centenary this year.

The Kurla Car Shed, built in 1925, is situated on the west side of the railway track between Kurla and Vidyavihar stations. It employs around 500 to 600 workers who operate in three shifts to maintain 70 to 75 local trains. The workers conduct regular overhauling of rakes, ranging from minor checks every three days to extensive maintenance every 18 months. Recently, approval has been granted to expand the car shed’s capacity to accommodate additional rakes.

A significant upgrade in the training of railway employees is also underway at Kurla Car Shed. A Virtual Reality (VR)-based training system, procured in January this year, has been installed in a dedicated laboratory within the premises. This system includes a large screen, headset, handheld controllers, gloves, and other accessories to create an immersive learning experience.

Currently, railway officials and engineers are integrating details of various train components into the system, including bogies, wheels, and springs. Over time, additional elements such as seats, doors, windows, lights, fans, roofs, and pantographs will be added. This VR-based module aims to train personnel in repairing everything from the smallest components to the largest equipment in Mumbai’s local trains.

Additionally, an old barracks in the car shed is being renovated into a modern training center with four classrooms, each accommodating 40 to 60 trainees. These classrooms will also be equipped with VR-based training systems, ensuring a more advanced and efficient learning process for railway employees.
