Now it will be more convenient to reach Delhi directly from Mumbai in less time. A tunnel will be constructed to reach Delhi from the mountains of Matheran in 12 hours from Mumbai. Known as the longest in the world, it is a 1350 km route that connects Delhi to Uran's JNPT port. For this purpose, a 4.39 km eight-tiered tunnel will soon be excavated through the hills of Matheran's eco-sensitive zone.
Reach Delhi in 12 hours
The tunnel will start from Morbe village at the foothills of Matheran near Panvel and will extend to Bhoj village near Ambernath in Thane district. After getting the permission of the environment department, the contract for its construction has been awarded by the National Highway Authority to the Ircon company. 1 thousand 453 crore rupees will be spent on tunnels. The NHAI recently tweeted pictures of the tunnel construction and said work on package number 17 of the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway is underway. The route of this complex consists of Matheran Hills, in the middle of which twin tunnels are being constructed. The tunnel will have 8 lanes, with both entry and exit lanes to be 4 lanes each.
8 lane road
Matheran Hills is considered as an Eco Sensitive Zone. This hill station is one of the most favourite tourist destinations of people from Mumbai and Pune. Matheran is home to wild animals. That is why many types of environmental approvals had to be taken to build this tunnel. Construction of an 8-lane road in the middle of this hill full of natural beauty is a particularly challenging task.
Excavation for 8 km
The NHAI has said that 8 km of excavation will be required to construct the 4,150 km long tunnel. Most of his work is done. A system to protect against wild animals will also be equipped on the outer path of the tunnel. The construction of the tunnel is in progress and NHAI expects to complete the tunnel by the end of the year.
