In the Thane Municipal Corporation area, there are 81 unauthorised schools with a total of 19,708 students enrolled. The Education Department of Thane Municipal Corporation has filed complaints against all these schools. Police have registered FIRs against 68 of these schools, and the process of registering FIRs against the remaining 13 schools is underway. The corporation is working to transfer these students to authorised schools to prevent any educational loss.
Thane Municipal Commissioner, Saurabh Rao, recently reviewed the situation of these unauthorised schools. Many of these schools are not registered, some are operating in unauthorised buildings, and others are renting spaces in residential buildings, according to Deputy Commissioner (Education), Sachin Sangale. A list of these schools has been published in local newspapers, and a fine of INR 52 crores has been imposed on them under the Right to Education Act.
Most of these unauthorised schools are in the Diva ward, where action has already begun. So far, water connections have been cut off for 32 unauthorised schools, and the Encroachment Department is also planning action based on the illegal construction list from the City Development Department.

Commissioner Saurabh Rao has stated that the corporation will help the schools that can be regularised. Out of the 81 schools, 5 have submitted the necessary documents to do so. The remaining 76 schools have not yet submitted any proposals, and they have been given one more opportunity to do so.
To prevent student loss, the corporation is also considering transferring students to nearby authorised schools. 19 private schools have expressed their readiness to accommodate these students.
