Mumbai: UK's Crossrail to support metro project in MMR

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority's (MMRDA) metro projects in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region have now received a boost from Crossrail International, which comes under the UK government's Department for Transport. In Davos, a memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed between MMRDA and Crossrail International to provide assistance in the operation, maintenance and safety of the metro project, as well as other works and services. Accordingly, Crossrail and MMRDA have now started work. An important meeting was recently held in this regard and the services and facilities of the metro project will now be strengthened.


The MMRDA is constructing a 337 km long metro network in MMR. Currently, out of the 337 km, approximately 59 km of metro lines are operational in Mumbai. These include Metro 1 (Ghatkopar – Andheri – Versova), Metro 2A (Dahisar – Andheri West), Metro 3 (Aarey – BKC), Metro 7 (Dahisar – Gundavali). Some more lines are expected to come into service in the next one or two years.

The MMRDA is working to strengthen various facilities in the metro project to make the metro service an efficient transportation option. As part of this, a memorandum of understanding was signed between MMRDA and Crossrail at the recently held World Economic Forum 2025 in Davos. Under this agreement, UK-based Crossrail International will provide necessary support for various services in the metro projects in MMR. Crossrail will cooperate with MMRDA to strengthen various services. Crossrail will now help make metro transport more efficient by further strengthening the operations, maintenance, safety, and digital transformation services of the metro project.


Metropolitan Commissioner Dr. Sanjay Mukherjee informed that Crossrail has now started actual work.  Dr. Mukherjee recently chaired a meeting which included experts from the UK Department for Transport and Crossrail International. Dr. Mukherjee also explained that several issues were discussed with a view to strengthening various services in the metro project. Now that the actual work has begun, it is believed that metro transport in the MMR will definitely emerge as an efficient, robust transport option in the coming days.
