After light to moderate rainfall experienced in and around Maharashtra for the last couple of days, the seven lakes that supply water to the island city reportedly has only 18 per cent of water left in their stock.

Moreover, the water supply is reportedly on a decline for the last 2-3 days. According to sources, the seven lakes, Upper Vaitarna, Modaksagar, Tansa, Madhya Vaitarna, Bhatsa, Vihar and Tulshi dams supply 3,800 million litres of water to Mumbai daily.

Together, these seven dams have a storage capacity of 2,66,848 million litres till Wednesday, July 7, which is only 18.44 per cent of the storage capacity of the dam. Back in the month of June, the torrential rains started on time, as a result, the water supply had increased in the lakes. By the end of June, sparse rainfall and water seeping through the soil were increasing the water level in the lakes to some extent.

However, the water supply has been declining for the last two days. Therefore, like last year, there is a fear of water shortage this year as well. Meanwhile, a review of water availability is expected to take place by next week.

While the urban water crisis in Mumbai has been a continual problem in the city, the people of Mumbai have been facing water shortages several times over the years. However, if the rainfall is good then several lakes are touted to overflow or be filled till the brim and that will ensure an adequate supply of water to Mumbai.
