The High Court referred the murder case of Abhishek Ghosalkar, a former Shiv Sena corporator from the Uddhav Thackeray faction, to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), citing multiple flaws in the Mumbai Police’s investigation. Following the referral, the CBI registered a case. Businessman Maurice Noronha, also known as Maurice Bhai, had shot Abhishek Ghosalkar on February 8 while Ghosalkar was live-streaming on Facebook from his office in Borivali. After the shooting, Noronha took his own life.

On September 6, the High Court ordered the case to be handed over to the CBI, stating that the Mumbai Police’s investigation had significant shortcomings. The court emphasized the need for a deeper inquiry. The ruling came during a hearing of a public interest litigation filed by Ghosalkar's wife, Tejashwi Ghosalkar, a corporator herself. In her petition, she argued that the Mumbai Crime Branch had failed to investigate critical aspects of the case.

In compliance with the High Court's directive, the CBI registered an FIR on Friday. The original FIR had been lodged at the MHB police station in Borivali West, following a complaint by a grocery shopkeeper. The CBI investigation will be led by IPS officer Deputy Inspector General Saili S. Dhurat.

The court also stated in its order that, despite the Mumbai Police’s claim of conducting a thorough investigation, the evidence suggested otherwise. The court noted that unless the suspicious circumstances surrounding the murder were fully examined and key aspects properly investigated, justice would not be served. The oversight in the investigation could not be ignored, as it risked denying justice altogether. A comprehensive investigation into the entire case, including aspects overlooked by the police, was deemed necessary by the court.
