Mumbai’s well-known gastroenterologist Dr. Deepak Amrapurkar died after falling into a manhole on Tuesday when the city was lashed with heavy rains. The Federation Of Retail Traders Welfare Association has filed a PIL before the division bench of Chief Justice Manjula Chellur and NM Jamdar asking to register a FIR against the BMC for criminal negligence. It has also asked for compensation of INR 50 lakh. However, the High Court denied the demands saying that the PIL should be filed by the relatives of slain Dr. Amrapurkar.

However, the court acknowledged the other issues in the petition. They demanded that the court should form an advisory committee which will include renowned ex-bureaucrats and technocrats who will carry out a detailed inspection of all the manholes existing in the city.
The petitioners demanded that the BMC should reveal how do they handle the manholes and if they cover it with a safety net. The HC agreed to this demands and has asked the BMC to revert within two weeks.
Dr. Amrapurkar left the hospital around 4:30 pm. He had parked his car near the India Bulls tower, Lower Parel. He and his driver left but when they reached Deepak Talkies, Elphinstone, the car got stuck in traffic due to water logging. He then asked his driver to drive the car home and he got down from the car. He called his wife around 6:30 pm and told her that he was walking it back home but he never made it. His body was found near the seashore at Worli on Thursday, August 31 after he had gone missing on Tuesday.
